Does goal setting really work?

Will you be one of the 3 percent.
Let’s look at a study conducted with the Yale Graduating Class of 1953.
They surveyed all students asking them if they had written goals for their life:

3% had put their goals in writing

97% had not written them down or had none at all!

Twenty years later, these same people were re-interviewed.

The 3% who had written goals had 10 times the incomes than the other 97% combined!

There is NO DOUBT about it – Goal Setting Works!

A goal is merely a dream until it is written down.
You must find a goal that truly inspires you, something that will push you to do whatever it takes to accomplish it.

Goals keep you focused help you create your vision.

An Exercise in Patience and Perseverance

When I first started working with Chris Hutcherson we didn’t know anything about each other. We had “met” on LinkedIn.  As usual, I was recruiting for an MLM I was in at that time.  In the process of that recruiting, we started talking about network marketing general. We quickly realized that we had complementary knowledge.  Chris knew a lot about starting businesses and raising capital.  I knew a lot about network marketing and had the connections to reach hundreds of network marketers.

Over time, we also started talking about some ideas we had for lead generation and a television network that would cater to network marketers. The Elevision Network came about as an evolution from those talks. Over the months, other people with expertise were added.  People like Frank McGuire, the spokesperson for The Elevision Network and one of the most interesting (any funny) people I have ever met and now get to call friend and mentor..  Things seemed to be going along really well and really quickly.

As often happens with new ventures. The Elevision Network ran into a few glitches.  Some easily solved (like a credit card processor that backed out), some not so easily solved (the need for some heavy duty financial backing). Throughout the process, Chris never lost sight of the goal.  His patience and perseverance kept everything alive and moving along.

The Elevision Network is a resource that will change how network marketers learn.  It will also change how they teach each other this business. With the expertise of people like Zig Zigler, Bob Burg, Bob Proctor at their finger tips 24 hours a day, seven days a week, network marketers can learn from the best any time and any way that works for them.

These benefits extend beyond network marketers to anyone that wants to improve their life, be entertained, or just learn something new.  With hundreds of hours of content, The Elevision Network offers something for everyone-at the touch of a button.

None of this would have been possible without the leadership, patience and perseverance of Chris Hutcherson.  He is glue that kept everything together, even when times got tough and the problems mounted.  The Elevision Network is due to launch this week.  All the hard work of Chris and everyone involved is about to pay off and we will all benefit from the wonderful information that The Elevision Network will bring to anyone in the world with an internet connection.

How to Get People to Read Your Article, Do You Know How?

Copyright 2008 Soaring Eagle Companies LLC

That’s right how do I get people to read this article? I know, do you know? There are tons of articles about just about any subject anyone could imagine. Now with Ezines, printed articles, blogs, websites, everywhere we look there is information about something. This includes articles about people like Chris A. Hutcherson or Chris Hutcherson, or Josh Hutcherson or maybe even Gary Goldstein. So how do you get people to filter out all the other stuff and read your particular article?

As you might suspect, the headline of the article is probably the most important feature of the article. As people are searching the web or scanning a magazine, you have about one second to get their attention. The title of the article should be eye-catching as well as say something about what the article is about. There are lots of publications that use this principle to the max. Ever look at the cover of Sports Illustrated or The New Yorker or really almost any magazine that is sold on a news stand? There are tons of headlines on their covers that make you want to read the rest of the article.

If the headlines are compelling enough, you buy the magazine. The headlines have served their initial purpose. Is the main headline article on page 1? Of course not! The magazine publishers want you to look through the rest o the magazine. As you are paging through the magazine you see other headlines that catch your eye. In fact, you may forget which article you were trying to get to in the first place!

Even after you get their attention, we all know that very few people are going to read your article word for word. People just don’t have the time. So make your important points stand out. Use subheadings if you can. The subheadings will encourage people to move down to the rest of the article.

Make the beginning of each paragraph grab their attention. If I don’t find the first line of the paragraph interesting or important, then I may not bother to read the rest of it. I’m just looking for the information that interests me. We are all in the process of filtering information. Anything you can do to facilitate that filtering will increase the chances that people that are the most interested in what you are writing about will find your article. Just remember it is all in the headline.

Why Diet Sodas are Fattening

The Cephalic Fat Spiral

2007

For as long as humans have lived on Earth, they have been eating foods that taste sweet, such as sugar cane and honey.

So, the brain has a conditioned response in reaction to eating something sweet.

It is called the Cephalic Phase Insulin Response (CPIR), and it’s responsible for the fat-storing effects of diet beverages, including diet sodas, diet tea, coffee, energy drinks, sports drinks, and flavored waters.

This adaptation in humans is a reaction to the ingestion of sweet-tasting foods. The body learned to associate sweet-taste on the tongue with the resulting sugar-energy-load that landed in the stomach.

The brain came to perceive sweet-taste with the need to program the liver to
prepare for the arrival of an outside source of high energy – sugar.

As the tongue senses something sweet, it programs the brain to set into motion a series of biochemical events. It doesn’t matter if the sweet taste comes from natural honey or from artificial sweeteners.

This biochemical cascade triggers the liver to stop the manufacture of protein and starch from its body-reserves, and to begin to store the glucose-energy that circulates in the blood.

In the case of diet beverages, the sweet taste sets these events into motion.

But when no calories actually appear in the stomach, this causes the body to demand real food, with resulting hyper-urges from the liver to overeat, or to drink more of the sweet-tasting liquid, and the cascade repeats itself.

Almost instantly, the body starts producing insulin, the “fat” hormone, which stores sugar in the blood stream, and programs the adipose tissue fat cells (belly fat) to store, store, store.

This Cephalic Phase Insulin Response (CPIR) creates reactive hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which further triggers strong cravings for more sweet-tasting items, and high glycemic foods.

After the taste buds are activated by a sweet-taste, the urge to ingest food can last from 1 to 2 hours. So, you are hungry for hours, because no real food or calories has satiated the body’s need for energy.

And now, the body is producing insulin for no reason, because the brain has instructed the liver to store instead of burn/release its storage supplies.

The result is fat, fat, fatter – the Cephalic Fat Spiral.

2007-2008

DISCUSSION

For the past 25 years, the scientific community has strived to established connections between the obesity epidemic and the food chain. The aim of the present discussion is to identify the most commonly ingested sugars and sweeteners, and their biochemical effects on obesity and diabetes.

State-of-the-Art biomedical research has identified the key factors related to obesity, weight management, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes in humans. The primary factors are:
• Lipoprotein Lipase (LPL) Adipose Tissue Fat-Storage
• Sugars and Sweeteners that Stimulate Glycemic Response
• Brain-Glycemic-Indexing
• Insulinogenic Fat-Storing Mechanisms
• Fat-Storing Effects of -0- Calorie Diet Sodas & Beverages
• Artificial Sweeteners: Stimulation of Fat-Storage
• Fat-Stimulation Factors Related to Natural Sweeteners
• Cephalic Phase Insulin Response (CPIR)
• Age-Related Reduced Fat-Burning
• Genetic Adaptation
• Caloric Overload
• Hormones: Leptin, Neuropeptide Y, Agouti, etc

EVOLUTIONARY INFLUENCES

Obesity is obviously a consequence of increased food intake, driven by palatability and marketing, while the over-riding endocrine and genetic factors are silent partners in the obesity epidemic.

Anthropological-driven hormonal factors, such as Serotonin and Testosterone, stimulate humans to “eat all the time” and in great variety, thus persons genetically destined to become obese may eat more often, more rapidly, and in larger quantity before reaching satiety.

The role of hard-wired food-related mechanisms are currently being explored, such as Agouti-related protein (AgRP), a hypothalamic peptide involved in the regulation of feeding.

ADIPOSE FAT-STIMULATION VIA SWEETENERS

One of the major evolutionary tricks for survival is the desire for fattening foods. Without sufficient body fat levels in the female, the human species cannot procreate, and becomes extinct. This is observed in anorexics, in which low body fat results in cessation of menses and thus the inability to produce children. In males, low body fat levels do not prevent procreation.

Ergo, the female of the human species is hard-wired to create and hold higher body fat levels. In terms of survival of the species, the fatter, the better.

This is not a preferable advantage in a society of abundant and fattening foods. But, the brain is unaware of this fact, and cannot fathom that there are grocery stores and fast food. It could take hundreds of years before humans evolve to the point that the brain understands that there is food-a-plenty.

SWEETENERS THAT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ANTHROPOLOGY

Sweeteners, both natural and synthetic, can stimulate adipose tissue fat-storage, primarily in belly-fat. In the female, procreation requires adequate levels of adipose tissue abdominal fat (belly fat). This area-specific fat helps insure a healthy baby.

The biochemical mechanisms that separate natural and synthetic sweeteners vary, but the result is the same, weight gain, more and larger fat cells, insulin resistance, and increase in incidence of type 2 diabetes.

Natural sweeteners can cause fat-cell-stimulation as can artificial sweeteners. Neither are exempt from contributing to human obesity and diabetes.

Sweeteners that contain -0- sugars, -0- fat, and -0- carbohydrates can still trigger abdominal obesity (belly fat) and parallel increases in type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance.

The culprits, in both natural and artificial sweeteners, can be identified as:
• Types of sugar
• Amount of sugars
• Brix levels of sweeteners
• Sweet-taste perception in the mouth (Cephalic Response)
• Types of artificial sweeteners
• -0- Calories/Carbs
• Glycemic Response

In foods and beverages, some sweeteners are not labeled as sugars, but act like sugars, such as Maltodextrins. Though the food/beverage label may state -0- sugars, there may be enough non-labeled sugars to cause huge elevations in blood glucose, insulin, Cephalic, and LPL fat-storage.

Foods, snacks, and beverages that contain fat-storing sweeteners, such as sugar (sucrose) and/or glucose, leads to dopaminergic and endorphin brain reward signals, with gastrointestinal satiety mechanisms leading to negative feedback from the gut via hormonal output.

PROTOCOLS

The effects of sweet taste and energy content on fat-stimulating responses can be quantified in Human In Vivo clinical trials. This requires the implementation of specific protocols that have been designed to measure the concomitant changes in blood glucose, insulin concentrations, and other perimeters, as related to oral ingestion of various sugars and sweeteners.

In the natural sugars and carbohydrates arena, sucrose, glucose, and maltodextrins are the most commonly used ingredient in foods and beverages.

Identifying fat-storing perimeters in artificial sweeteners is more complicated, and requires Cephalic testing. Combinations of natural sugars and artificial sweeteners mandates bi-and tri-level clinical trials in humans designed to track known fat-storage mechanisms and bio-markers.

Current protocols in quantifying fat-storage mechanisms in humans include glycemic indexing, Cephalic testing, randomized crossover design trial with functional magnetic resonance imaging, gastric lipase secretion, changes in gastrointestinal transit activity, pancreatic exocrine response, and gut hormonal response.

In studies with six different olfactory stimuli, the medial orbitofrontal cortex represents pleasant taste experiences, while the lateral orbitofrontal cortex represents unpleasant taste stimuli. Specific portions of the brain build associations between different food-related stimuli.

In the design of food and beverages, manufacturers have addressed more than visual aspects. Taste, sweetness, olfactory, and cognitive inputs have been intensively used to advantage by food manufacturers, thus overriding evolutionarily developed satiety signals.

During clinical trials, quantification of fat-storage factors related to a specific sugar, or combination of sugars and sweeteners (1), can be accurately determined utilizing controls against a specific percent of sugar or carbohydrate solution dissolved in water (Test Agent).

If the sugar/sweetener is present in a food or beverage, Comparative Analysis Trials can used to compare the biochemical value of a sugar/sweetener with a control that does not contain any sugars or sweeteners (1).

Cephalic testing (CPIR) requires highly sophisticated methodologies and equipment designed to track brain-insulin-signaling with miniscule half-lives (1).

IDENTIFYING BIOCHEMICAL CULPRITS

Prolonged and significant signal decrease in the upper hypothalamus (P < 0.05) can be observed in whereas control agent will exhibit no such effect.

Ingested Test Agents that increase glycemic perimeters, blood glucose and/or insulin concentrations, and/or trigger an early rise in insulin concentrations and/or Cephalic Phase Insulin Response (CPIR) are considered culprits in weight gain, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and insulin resistance.

PATHOLOGY of SUCROSE & GLUCOSE FAT-STORAGE

Aside from stimulating glycemic and insulinogenic perimeters, high glycemic sugars such as sucrose and glucose, can stimulate intense fat-storage, reactive hypoglycemia, as well as Cephalic Response via the brain.

There is a prolonged dose-dependent decrease in the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal in the hypothalamus a few minutes after the ingestion of a glucose solution.

BOLD functional MRI (fMRI) measures changes in neuronal activity levels based on the associated changes in the local concentrations of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin.

Hypothalamic response to sweet taste and energy content of the sucrose/glucose mix and concomitant changes in blood glucose and insulin concentrations: Sucrose/glucose ingestion resulted in a prolonged signal decrease in the upper hypothalamus, with a negative early rise in plasma insulin.

Parallel observations have been identified in which researchers found a preeminent role of glucose in triggering cephalic phase insulin release (CPIR). Early decrease in the hypothalamic signal, is observed post-glucose ingestion, and is associated with CPIR.

Further, glucose is associated with an early rise in insulin concentration, and glucose triggers a decrease in fMRI signal in the upper hypothalamus. The additional decrease in fMRI signal is associated with a rise in insulin concentration.

DIABETIC INSULIN PROFILES

Use of sucrose/glucose mixtures and or glucose without sucrose, leads to a diabetic insulin profile as associated with a higher glucose peak and a prolonged duration of hyperglycemia.

Insulin secretion can occur in a biphasic manner depending on the type and magnitude of the glucose stimulus (dose/level). Chronic hyperinsulinemia can lead to -cell exhaustion, causing down-regulation of the insulin receptor and increasing insulin resistance, which can produce negative consequences on the vascular endothelium.

The magnitude of the first phase of CPIR occurs in response to a single-step glucose stimulus increases with increasing doses of glucose. The amount of insulin released during this phase is a sigmoidal function of glucose concentration (with a half-maximum for glucose of 135 mg/dl). If ingestion continues in short intervals, this first-phase insulin response is inhibited; in contrast, if longer time intervals are used, enhancement of the first-phase insulin response is observed at the second stimulation.

BIPHASIC INSULIN RESPONSE

First phase of CPIR occurs instantaneously after ingestion of a Cephalic agent, while the 2nd CPIR phase can last for a few hours, if the -cell is continuously exposed to glucose.

DEFINING LIPOGENESIS (FAT-STORAGE)

Lipogenesis is the process that converts excess dietary carbohydrates into fat for storage as a source of long-term energy (adipogenesis). The deposition of fat and/or the conversion of carbohydrate or protein to fat, in this case facilitated by sucrose/glucose ingestion, changes insulin concentrations post-prandially, and correlates positively with a change in hepatic lipogenesis resulting in adipose tissue fat-storage.
.
IN CONCLUSION

Foods and beverages with zero sugars and zero calories can trigger fat-storage and insulin release. Swallowing the food or beverage is obsolete to the Cephalic Response.

Cephalic phase hormonal release occurs through activation of vagal-efferent fibers in response to food-related sensory stimuli. Tasting, chewing and expectorating food elicits hormonal release prior to nutrient absorption.

With properly designed clinical trials, the physiological consequences of ingesting various sugars, carbohydrates, and sweeteners can be identified and quantified.

The resulting data is an educational tool for the public fighting an obesity and diabetic epidemic, as well as a metabolic map for food and beverage manufacturers.

Under Promise and Over Deliver

True business savvy is difficult to come by these days. The Elevision Network has been in the works for over a year. Chris has taken a loosely formed group of people and turned them into a dedicated team working on this once in a lifetime opportunity. From the technical expertise needed to meeting with speakers, Chris’ enthusiasm has been contagious and consistent. Now all this work is about to come to fruition with the launch of The Elevision Network. Congratulations Chris, launching this project is an amazing achievement!

You Have to Start Somewhere!

You have watched people on various networking sites. Maybe you have even dabbled yourself. Putting up a profile is a great start, but then what? Chris A. Hutcherson faced the same dilemma. He knew there was great power in the internet and in the social networking sites. But where and how should he start?

Then Chris started watching his kids. They were always on the internet and seemed to be talking to people all over the world. How were they doing it? Chris A. Hutcherson used to be teacher. He knew that kids were usually very knowledgeable about the latest technology and how to use it. Chris decided it was time to learn something from his kids. He watched them use Facebook and MySpace, two popular sites with kids. These sites were interesting, but Chris A. Hutcherson had a big project in mind that would require specific expertise. He wasn’t sure these sites were the place to find that kind of expertise.

Chris A. Hutcherson Discovers LinkedIn

Chris started searching and eventually discovered LinkedIn. This site, devoted more to business networking, was just what Chris was looking for. Chris A. Hutcherson made a commitment to build the kind of network he needed for his project. Chris put in the time and soon had the large network he needed. Chris continues to work on his networking through LinkedIn and the project he dreamed of is well underway—all thanks to LinkedIn.

Your Reputation – Do You Have 20 Years to Rebuild It?

•December 19, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Warren Buffett put it correctly when he said “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.  If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” We might spend a lot of time worrying about our personal reputation, but it is just as important to worry about our company’s reputation. The Elevision Network has worked hard to make sure that the pre-launch was going to build a solid reputation for the future of their company.  After all, who has 20 years to undo even on bad decision?

First the company worried about the content that their affiliates were going to get as part of their training.  This content had to be first-rate.  It had to have value for the affiliates and be something that could help them not only in Elevision, but in any business they were currently engaged in.

Second was the highly complex technology involved to make this available at the finger tips of affiliates.  There had to be no glitches either on the website or in the sign up process.  While this pursuit of perfection may have cost some time and took longer than anyone would have liked, having glitches would have translated into frustration on the part of the affiliates, bad feelings toward Elevision, and cost far more than any waiting.

While it is not possible to subscribe yet, when subscriptions are available, you can be sure that The Elevision Network will have put the same due diligence into the channels and content that will be available to subscribers.

This is one company that has worked hard to make sure it builds a solid reputation and will work equally hard to make sure that they keep those high standards.  When you subscribe to The Elevision Network, you can be sure that you will be getting a great value for your money.  The speakers will be the best in their respective areas of expertise.  You can also be sure that they will continue to work to bring you new content that you can use.  There will always be something new and different.

In this day and age of shortcuts, the level of quality and care that The Elevision Network has taken to bring a quality product far and above what would be expected is a true indication of their commitment to their affiliates and their future subscribers.  TEN takes their reputation seriously and will continue to provide only the best for many years to come.

The Ripple Effect – How Far Can it Go?

•December 22, 2008 • Leave a Comment

We all know about the ripple effect. You drop a rock in the water and watch the ripples going out until they fade away. With The Elevision Network, the ripple effect will go on for a very long time.

Elevision started with one man, who then found another man on LinkedIn.  These two men found other people with the expertise they needed to get this company off the ground.  They found others that had the money to invest in this venture.  Then they found people that knew how to market on the internet and how to reach multi-level marketers.  Those people reached the people that they knew that would be interested in what The Elevision Network had to offer.  And so it would go.

But the ripple effect from Elevision will go far beyond the people that are involved or the people that subscribe.  First, the people that are involved with Elevision had big plans for how they can help others.  Christ Hutcherson, the CEO of Elevision has a long history of helping children.  He intends to use Elevision to continue with his goal of raising one billion dollars for children.  Others have goals like funding a beginning church, contributing to medical research, cancer research, world hunger.  There are as many different philanthropic interests as there are people involved with Elevision.

But the ripple doesn’t stop there.  For the people that subscribe to Elevision, who knows how many will reach their financial, spiritual, learning, or other goals.  From those people, other ripples will happen as they are able to help other people either through what they have learned through Elevision or by being able to contribute in a major financial way to their causes.  Dreams can come true and new dreams will be born.

The reach of The Elevision Network is not confined to just one country or just one group of people.  It is available to anyone and everyone that has an internet connection.  While the information is only in English, in the future it will be translated into many languages so as many people as possible can benefit from what Elevision has to offer.

Many years from now, when many of us are no longer here, and perhaps even Elevision is gone or has evolved into something different, we will never know the true effect of Elevision since the ripples will have gone on and on.  It will have touched the lives of millions.

What has the holidays got to do with your MLM network marketing?

•December 31, 2008 • Leave a Comment

What can you do to accelerate your MLM network marketing business during the Holiday season and gets it going during what most people think as the “sluggish time” of the year for network marketing?

Some things you can do for your MLM network marketing success during the holidays.

1. Fruit baskets.

You can get inexpensively small fruit baskets, put your samples or coupons in and decorate it in the colors of your MLM network marketing company.

Include an invite to a seminar that they can attend at not cost. Give them out to friends, neighbors, associates, clients, customers, and family. You will glad you did.

2. Holiday audio cards.

Send out with your Christmas cards a CD you recorded especially for that person, and wish them happy holidays. Then tell them you would love to chat with them at the start of the year because you want to give them the gift of success.

This is a great way to introduce the concept of MLM network marketing success to these folks.

3. Hold a holiday customer appreciation luncheon or reception.

You can do this at your home. Simply invite your best MLM customers to a holiday appreciation event, and make them the superstars of that party.

Have small gifts for them, and let them know how much you appreciate their business. Then ask them for referrals for the coming year. You will get them from every single person who was at that event.

4. Holiday upline open house.

If you have an organization, you could either open your house or someone who has a sizeable home and invite your MLM network marketing distributors to an open house.

Have them bring guests. Have a party that celebrates the holidays but is sponsored by your company. Let it be a fun social with music and games, and then connect with the guest to follow up in January.

5. Neighborhood holiday mailer.

Go to the library, and look in the cross-reference index for your address. You will notice there are a ton more in that index that are in your neighborhood.

Make a copy of the addresses, as they are your neighbors, then send them a Christmas card introducing yourself as their neighborhood rep, and wish them a Merry Christmas and Happy new year.

Then follow up in January and see if you can set an appointment to chat with them about your MLM networking products. Telephone numbers are included on the cross-index reference guides found in your library. You are their neighbor, and that gives you some instant connection with them.

6. Visit community holiday functions.

The thing is to connect, connect and connect.

You need to connect to new prospects during the holidays and community functions are a great way to do this. Get out and become a “holiday MLM network marketing machine.”

Network and meet people and make new friends and give away something to them as a holiday gift. Make sure every person you talk to has a gift and your card. And that you have some form of contact info as well. Check your Sunday newspaper for where these events are.

7. The holiday success card.

Send people you know, and also prospect a seasonal card, and include within it an article about success, goal setting, leadership, time management, or any other success oriented topic. This will set you apart from the rest.

Rock your MLM network marketing business during the holidays. You will be surprised at what might happen to your business.

Do not want to start your own MLM business? Your loss…

•December 31, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Ask yourself. Why would you want to start your own MLM business? Maybe you want to be like those people who have already been in this filed and is earning the amount of money you can only dream about.

If you put in enough effort, you can make a substantial amount of money every single month once your MLM has started and is already on its feet.

Just think, you can even start an MLM from home. Most people go to work each day, working in an office, store, or factory. For most of these people the options are limited when it comes to being able to work at home.

There are some people, however, who have the luxury of being able to stay home while they earn their living. Some jobs can be accomplished at home in the same amount of time as anywhere else and with the same amount of quality.

No two people are the same. There are others who are better off starting their MLM business at home. There are also those who do not feel the advantage of doing so. Whatever their choices may be, everything will still depend on the person making the decision.

When considering whether to start an MLM business, always begin with a good look at yourself. Decide what suits your needs best. See where you will be more productive.

You must determine your needs and motivations to see if starting an MLM business is right for you. What are your goals? What amount of income do you need for the business to provide? Do you want to work full or part-time? Do you need additional training to start the business? What will my start-up costs be? A world of questions must be answered before venturing out into the world of direct marketing.

If you choose to start an MLM business of your own, you will find yourself in good company.

Today, multilevel marketing is big business. There are large multinational corporations doing business as MLM. Chances are you are considering being a distributor of such a company. They offer good products along will training and support programs to help you get your business on its feet.

The financial requirement to start an MLM business is usually fairly low. Under the dollar amount is $200 or less. Beware of programs that require you to purchase huge amounts of inventory.

Most of these large MLM companies do not have such demands. In most case, you are paid a commission on the sales you generate and simply follow the sale through to delivery and money is collected.

They may also pay you commission on sales you generate “downline.” That is by people that you have recruited to join the program. The more downline you recruit, the more commission you will get.

Start an MLM business on solid ground by approaching the best chances for sales first. Your family, friends, and associates can be your best customers and the ones most likely to buy.

Since most MLM products are those used around the house such as soap and cleaners, everyone is in the market. After you have gotten your pitch down, explore other markets for sales such as churches, schools, and other large collections of people familiar with you.

So, do not want to start your own MLM business? You are missing out half of your life….

The Waiting Game

•January 8, 2009 • Leave a Comment

“God has the tough end of the deal. What if instead of planting the seed you had to make the tree? That would keep you up late at night, trying to figure that one out.” Jim Rohn

Starting a new business or investing in a new venture often involves waiting.  Waiting for everything to come together, overcoming the seemingly never-ending “glitches,” the inevitable delays.  It can all take a toll.  Pretty soon you find yourself just waiting.

The danger of waiting on business is that you can find yourself putting your whole life on hold.  Pretty soon you are saying, “Well, we can’t do this until next month” or “we can’t do that for a couple more months.”  It seem like you can’t do anything.  You can become paralyzed and depressed.  You can even start to think that maybe it is not worth it and you should just quit.

There are some things you can do to get past this particular dangerous phase. First and probably foremost, concentrate on what you can do instead of what you can’t do. Maybe it is something to do with the business, maybe it is something personal. Whatever it is, go ahead and do it. You will feel like you have accomplished something and it will keep you mind off other problems.

Second, find things are working in your life.  It may be something small, losing a pound or two or an accomplishment of one of your kids, even parts of the business that have come together. Remember, as long as you are making progress, you will get there eventually.

Third, do something for yourself. That may be as simple as dressing up for the day. Maybe taking some time for yourself to do something you like. Maybe read a book or even watch a television show.  What it is doesn’t matter as long it is something you enjoy.  I don’t feel guilty about it!

Fourth, take some time.  Laboring under the stress of starting something new without taking some quiet time to relax and reflect can cloud your judgment. All you will see is problems. Some solutions to those problems maybe in your head, but they are being crowded out by the hundreds of details and problems. Relaxing and taking some time clear your head can give you ideas and motivation that you didn’t even know you had.

Many people give up right before the payoff.  Probably because it seems like the most problems happen before it all comes together. In show business, they say that if you have a bad rehearsal you will have a good performance. Sometimes the same is true in business. Don’t give up, don’t lose faith in your idea or product, and keep your eye on the prize.

The Anatomy of a Successful Company

•January 8, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Have you ever thought of how the perfect company would look? Most of us have worked for someone at some point in our lives. What did you like about the way they did business? What didn’t you like? If you were running the company, what would you do? There are some key elements that can make or break a company.  The same is true whether you have team that is part of a multi-level marketing company or the company is an independent entity.

First, of course, is money. Obviously it takes money to run a company, but many companies underestimate their employees’ ability to understand how money flows through a company.  Many companies run into financial difficulties and are reluctant to let their employees know there are any problems until the very last minute. Unfortunately, by waiting so long they have cut off one major source of brain power that may have some solutions. Are your sales down? Are people leaving your team?  Ask them why!

Communication is always essential and probably the most difficult to accomplish effectively. The “chain of command” often gets in the way. Managers don’t think that the people under them need to know certain things, so they don’t communicate those things to them.  In the meantime, the people under them see things that are going on, but they don’t know why.  This makes them worried (often unduly). People work best when they have the big picture. Doing your job when you have no idea how your performance might affect others can cause issues that have an effect on the performance of the entire company.

Companies want loyalty from their employees, but they often don’t know how to earn it. Most of us don’t like change and that includes a new job. We have our routines and we like things that are familiar. When given the proper recognition, most people will stay with a company. The biggest mistake a company can make is to take their employees for granted.  An “all work, no play” atmosphere can cause people to become dissatisfied, even though it may have nothing to do with their job directly.  People like to be busy (it makes the day go faster), but they also like to be recognized for their hard work. This does not always mean with more money. A few words of praise can go a long way.

Whether the people you work with are your employees or just part of your team, remember that a company can be an asset or a liability. Make sure you consider yours an asset. Remember that communicating with your team or your employees is the best way to make sure they stick around.

Product versus Opportunity

•January 8, 2009 • Leave a Comment

One of the great debates in the multi-level marketing world is how to introduce someone new to the company.  Do you let them know about the product first or about the opportunity to recruit and build a team?  While it may be that there is not a one-size-fits-all solution to this question, most of the time it is better to lead with the product.

One of the reasons that a person might look seriously at a multi-level marketing company do so because they don’t like what they do. They don’t believe in the company they work for or what they are doing for whatever reason. You want that person to love what they do.  In order to love their multi-level marketing company, they need to believe in the products and they need to be consuming that product themselves. Otherwise, why would they ever want to tell anyone else about the products?

The entire company is built on the product.  If no product moves, nobody is going to make money, no matter how big of a team you have. For many companies, autoship, or automatically receiving a certain amount of product each month is the backbone of the company. Most autoships are designed to give your customer (or yourself) one months worth of product. If they don’t love the product, why would they want to commit to buying it each month? If they aren’t using the product, but do commit to autoship, pretty soon they have a garage full of product and then no one is happy.

Perhaps the best reason to make sure you lead with the product is the fact that if your customer loves the product, they are gong to want to know more about the company. Once they find our how great the company is, they are going to want to let others know about this great company with these great products. Their team is born.

This approach is one to use with people that are not familiar with multi-level marketing or have, perhaps, been involved before, but not experienced the success they desired. If you always lead with the opportunity you can set up unrealistic expectations and you may experience much higher drop out rates.  People that love the product and have been given a little time to learn about the product are more receptive to the recruiting opportunity and are less likely to drop out.

Recipe for Trouble: The Business Plan

•January 21, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Everyone knows that new business fail at a fairly high rate.  Most people assume that the reason is there is not enough money.  While that might be true in some cases, there are other things that can cause a new business to fail, even if they have plenty of money.

It would seem like common sense that the first thing that one would do when starting a new business would be to develop a business plan.  Some businesses are forced to do this by the bank if they wish to borrow any money.  However, some businesses start with a really great idea that attracts lots of investors.  So, this new business has a great idea, the money to get it started and the ball starts rolling and everything is great…for a while.

As the business continues to develop, they bring more people into the business.  Sometime these people are employees, but many times, particularly with a new business, these people are working on a contract basis or even with just a verbal agreement.  They may have understood the general idea behind the business, but they are lacking in knowledge of the detail.  But the money is there and the idea is great, so they are “in.”

As time goes on, something insidious begins to happen.  More people are coming in and things appear to be going well, but it becomes increasingly difficult to keep everyone on the same page.  It also becomes apparent that the deliverables for many of the people that are “working” is not well defined or maybe not even defined at all.  Money is going out the door at an alarming rate and yet the ultimate goal of the business seems even farther away. If this situation continues, many times the great idea will never happen, investors will lose their money, and the business will go under.

It is absolutely essential to take the time to do a complete business plan and to actually use that business plan in your business!  Make sure that everyone that works with you is aware of the plan and where you are trying to go.  The business plan should outline what you need and at one time.  Using that timeline, it is easy to establish the deliverables you need from people as you bring them on board.

Doing the business plan also makes it easier to determine potential pitfalls and to avoid them.  By having a business plan in writing you also have a document that you can use as a planning tool with the people you bring on for specific tasks.  If there is something in the plan that will not work as envisioned, it will be easier to make adjustments BEFORE everything gets off track.  By sharing the business plan, you bring everyone on board with the same goals and expectations.  Without a business plan, it is very easy to get caught up in the moment, lose track of where you were trying to go and generally experience a loss of confidence from your investors and the people that are working in the business.  When people lose confidence, they tend to move on, which could spell disaster for you and your business.

Taking the time to do the business plan will pay for itself many times over.  The plan will help your business get off to great start and stay on track and will decreases your chances of making one of many fatal mistakes that can happen in a new business.

This type of personal coaching is about being and doing your best-about time and goal management-about peak performance-about achieving higher levels of business or professional success.

Recipe for Trouble: Expansion

•January 21, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Everyone wants their business to grow and everyone wants to make as much money as possible in their business.  If they didn’t, they wouldn’t have started the business in the first place.

Starting a new business can be a long and trying process.  It can also be expensive and it may take some time before the business becomes profitable. However, it is important to stay true to your business.  You started the business with a particular goal in mind and with particular products.  You developed this great business plan based on those goals and ideas.  Maybe you even attracted investors with those ideas.  And, actually, things are going well.  Then it happens.  This great new product comes your way.  It has nothing to do with your current business, but it has great profit potential.  So, you decide to add it to you current line of products.

Suddenly everyone is confused.  These new products have nothing in common with the old ones.  Your customers can’t quite figure out what is going on.  If you have distributors or sales people in your business, they are confused as well.  Their customer-base wasn’t developed with these products in mind.  In fact, their customer base was developed with totally different products and ideas.  Even though you are still selling your original product, the addition of the totally new and totally unrelated product can throw doubts into people’s minds.  Is this company eventually going to stop making the product I like?  Why do they have this new product? Is the company going to change completely?

Why add something totally unrelated to a successful business?  Why not start another company for those products? You can certainly offer both to your customers and distributors, and you can even use the same successful business model for the new company that you used for your original company. By keeping them separate, you eliminate a lot of the confusion and questioning.  The new products that you added may not be in compatible with the reasons that someone buys your products.  For example, if you are a health and wellness company and you suddenly decide to sell tires, that is certainly going to be confusing to people.

People certainly understand when a company wants to take advantage of a new opportunity, but they also worry about losing the good thing they already have.  Stay true to your mission and who you are and the profits will follow.

This type of personal coaching is about being and doing your best-about time and goal management-about peak performance-about achieving higher levels of business or professional success.

Water is Critical to Your Life and Good Health

•January 24, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Your body is designed to be approx. 70% water. The most critical fluid in your body, your blood, is mostly water. Your muscles, skin, and vital organs all contain and need large amounts of water for optimal health. Water also transports oxygen to your cells, delivers nutrients, removes waste, and provides energy to the body.

Signs of Dehydration aka not enough water
Your body loses approx. 2.5 liters of water every day just through normal bodily functions. You lose water through urination, respiration, and perspiration. If you are physically active or athletic, you lose even more water. Although “thirst” is an obvious sign of dehydration, the TRUTH is your body is in need of water long before you feel thirsty.

Symptoms of mild dehydration include chronic pains in joints and muscles, lower back pain, headaches, and constipation. A strong odor to your urine, along with a yellow or amber color indicates that you are not getting enough water.

Alkalinity = Good Health!

“The cells of a healthy body are alkaline while the cells of a diseased body are acidic.” – Dr. Arthur Guyton (author of the “Textbook of Medical Physiology”)

Unfortunately, for many of us, our lifestyles and dietary habits have a negative effect on our pH balance. This can directly influence our immediate health and vitality as well as create cumulative effects that will negatively affect our long-term health. For example, there are two characteristics of this country’s most popular beverages, soft drinks and coffee that make it difficult for you to maintain your optimum pH balance.

First, they are caffeinated and/or artificially sweetened, which makes them diuretic–the fluid lost because of these beverages can actually exceed what the beverage provides. Consequently, many people are unknowingly in a mild state of undiagnosed dehydration.

Second, these beverages are also very acidic. Because the waste produced by your metabolism is already acidic, the consumption of large amounts of acidic beverages creates even more downward pressure on your pH. Add to this the fact that a lack of aerobic exercise has resulted, for many people, in diminished cardio-pulmonary capacity. Mild dehydration, excessive consumption of acidic beverages and diminished cardio-pulmonary capacity translates into not enough water and oxygen to efficiently convert energy and eliminate waste. Is it any wonder we need stimulants in our beverages to get through the day? The acidic pressure on our pH balance is tremendous!

Is Your Body Acidic?
Some of the symptoms associated with acidic conditions in the body include weight loss problems, insomnia, water retention, arthritis, migraine headaches, constipation, colds, flu, stomach ulcers, acid reflux and even cancer. Many health experts agree that an overly acidic body greatly diminishes the effectiveness of your immune system and usually leads to disease.

Acidic conditions in the body are caused by: junk food, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, sodas, coffee, sports drinks, alcohol, environmental toxins, and stress. Considering this long list of items that can lead to acidic challenges in our body, it becomes very clear why it is so important to drink an alkaline beverage everyday.

WHY pH balance is critical to your health
In order for the body to maintain optimal health, it needs to manage a very narrow pH range (slightly alkaline) – especially in the blood. In fact, the body will go to almost any length necessary to maintain your blood pH at 7.34 – 7.45 because anything outside that pH range could result in death.

The process of restoring pH balance in your body always includes proper diet and nutrition. This means eating alkalizing foods (vegetables, low sugar fruits, etc.) and getting proper nutritional supplementation. However, the foundation of healthy pH balance is in drinking plenty of alkaline water.

Perhaps it’s time to make a change in the water you drink. We can’t live without it so why not drink water that tastes great all the time and has some unique, helpful characteristics as well.

The economy is in the tank (or so they say), you are worried about losing your job.  You get up every morning dreading going to work because you don’t know what is going to happen.  On top of that, it is winter, cold, cloudy, and it snowed again last night.  Great, more shoveling.  You get home from work and sit down to relax in front of the TV.  You start flipping channels.  There is the news—more depressing stuff, a movie you have seen 20 times, some show about how they de-feather birds (yuck!), and cartoons.  You know you need to do something, but where to start?

You get on the computer.  Someone has sent you an email about this new thing called Elevision.  You almost hit delete, but it looks interesting—at least more interesting than anything else you’ve seen today, so you check it out.  Maybe you have heard of some of the speakers (Bob Proctor, Dianna Booher, Denis Waitley, and others), or maybe you haven’t.  You start watching.  Hey, this is great.  Nothing negative and wait…what was that idea again?  You just stop the video and start over.  Hey, yeah, I could do that.  Pretty soon you start wondering what else is on this Elevision.  You decide to subscribe and try it.  Heck, it’s only $29.99 for a month.  You spend more than that on diet soda!

Next thing you know it is 1 in the morning.  You have been watching Elevision half the night.  You have so many ideas in your head, you aren’t sure you are ever going to be able to go to sleep.  You get up the next morning and go to work, but you can’t wait to get home to watch more Elevision.  You feel better than you have for a long time!  You want to tell all your friends about The Elevision Network.  You know they are looking for inspiration as much as you are!

Elevision is television that takes you to a higher level.  No negative news, no cartoons, just entertaining, uplifting, imaginative television through the Internet.  If you have an Internet connection, you can have The Elevision Network, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  If you are tired of the same 200 channels of junk that is on your regular TV, you will love what is on The Elevision Network.  There is always something new.  You can learn as little or as much as you want.  Watch your favorite speakers as much as you want and when you want.  No trying to record you favorite show.  The Elevision Network is always there for you.

Recipe for Trouble: IT

•February 9, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Depending on how dependent your company is on computers, IT (or information technology) can be your biggest ally or the biggest thorn in your side.  While people tend to refer to IT for anything that involves computers, information technology can encompass a very large variety of business needs from servers to websites.  There is no one-size-fits-all IT professional any more than there is a one size fits all employee of any type.

If you don’t know a lot about the type of computer services you need, do a little homework.  Talk to people, read books, whatever it takes.  You need to know enough to globally figure out what you company does and does not need.  If you are not totally comfortable with IT, you might consider hiring a consultant to help you figure out what you need.  Like most professional, IT professional are passionate about what they do and they can tell you all kinds of things that you could do (and it will look and sound really, really cool).  That doesn’t mean that you should do it.

You will need to decide whether you to hire employees or whether you should just use a consultant.  If you have a need that is highly complex at the beginning, but easy to maintain once it is in place, you may be better off with a consultant.  If, on the other hand, you have fairly complex needs and anticipate that this will be the case for quite some time, you might want to consider hiring full-time employees.  It may also be a combination of the two.  (Just be sure they agree with each other!)

Be very specific about deliverables.  What do you expect this person (or these people) to accomplish?  How soon do you need it?  Information technology is strong on the science side, but there is a certain art to it as well.  The more specific about how you want to things to look, the types of storage you need (and how much), what you want your website to say, etc., the higher your chances of getting what you need in a timely manner.

Be prepared.  Have some contingencies built into your budget and into your schedule.  Good IT professionals are in high demand.  It is entirely possible that someone will get hired away from you.  IT is also often highly complex.  The more complex your needs, the more contingencies you should allow for.  A bad hard drive, unavailability of certain parts, a change in the technology, connection problems—all these things can put a cramp in your budget and your timeframe.  Also allow for upgrades and maintenance.

Building the proper IT infrastructure can be one of the most important parts of your business, particularly if your business is heavily dependent on computer technology.  Mistakes at the beginning can be very costly down the road and can cost you thousands.  Be sure you do your homework, hire good people, and know what you want.  Be active in the process and meet with your IT professionals on a frequent basis.

Calling all Ducks!

•February 17, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Well after working for years and listening to many mentors the one I still remember among the top is this story.

No one can make you serve customers well.
That’s because great service is a choice.

Harvey Mackay, tells a wonderful story about a cab driver that proved this point.

He was waiting in line for a ride at the airport. When a cab pulled up, the first thing Harvey noticed was that the taxi was polished to a bright shine. Smartly dressed in a white shirt, black tie, and freshly pressed black slacks, the cab driver jumped out and rounded the car to open the back passenger door for Harvey .

He handed my friend a laminated card and said: ‘I’m Wally, your driver. While I’m loading your bags in the trunk I’d like you to read my mission statement.’

Taken aback, Harvey read the card.

It said: Wally’s Mission Statement:
To get my customers to their destination in the quickest, safest and cheapest way possible in a friendly environment.

This blew Harvey away. Especially when he noticed that the inside of the cab matched the outside. Spotlessly clean!

As he slid behind the wheel, Wally said, ‘Would you like a cup of coffee? I have a thermos of regular and one of decaf.’

My friend said jokingly, ‘No, I’d prefer a soft drink.’

Wally smiled and said, ‘No problem. I have a cooler up front with regular and Diet Coke, water and orange juice.’

Almost stuttering, Harvey said, ‘I’ll take a Diet Coke.’

Handing him his drink, Wally said, ‘If you’d like something to read, I have The Wall Street Journal, Time, Sports Illustrated and USA Today.’

As they were pulling away, Wally handed my friend another laminated card, ‘These are the stations I get and the music they play, if you’d
like to listen to the radio.’

And as if that weren’t enough, Wally told Harvey that he had the air conditioning on and asked if the temperature was comfortable for him.

Then he advised Harvey of the best route to his destination for that time of day. He also let him know that he’d be happy to chat and tell him about some of the sights or, if Harvey preferred, to leave him
with his own thoughts.

‘Tell me, Wally,’ my amazed friend asked the driver, ‘have you always served customers like this?’

Wally smiled into the rear view mirror. ‘No, not always. In fact, it’s only been in the last two years. My first five years driving, I spent most of my time complaining like all the rest of the cabbies do. Then I heard the personal growth guru, Wayne Dyer, on the radio one day.

He had just written a book called You’ll See It When You Believe It . Dyer said that if you get up in the morning expecting to have a bad day, you’ll rarely disappoint yourself. He said, ‘Stop complaining!
Differentiate yourself from your competition. Don’t be a duck. Be an eagle. Ducks quack and complain. Eagles soar above the crowd.”

‘That hit me right between the eyes,’ said Wally. ‘Dyer was really talking about me. I was always quacking and complaining, so I decided to change my attitude and become an eagle. I looked around at the other cabs and their drivers. The cabs were dirty, the drivers were unfriendly, and the customers were unhappy.. So I decided to make some changes. I put in a few at a time. When my customers responded well, I
did more.’

‘I take it that has paid off for you,’ Harvey said.

‘It sure has,’ Wally replied. ‘My first year as an eagle, I doubled my income from the previous year. This year I’ll probably quadruple it.
You were lucky to get me today. I don’t sit at cabstands anymore. My customers call me for appointments on my cell phone or leave a message on my answering machine. If I can’t pick them up myself, I get a reliable cabbie friend to do it and I take a piece of the action.’

Wally was phenomenal. He was running a limo service out of a Yellow Cab. I’ve probably told that story to more than fifty cab drivers over the years, and only two took the idea and ran with it. Whenever I go to their cities, I give them a call.. The rest of the drivers quacked like ducks and told me all the reasons they couldn’t do any of what I was suggesting.

Wally the Cab Driver made a different choice. He decided to stop quacking like ducks and start soaring like eagles.

How about us?

Smile, and the whole world smiles with you… The ball is in our hands!

A man reaps what he sows. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up… let
us do good to all people.

Ducks Quack, Eagles Soar

Never Hear “No” Again?

•February 20, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Do you find it hard to talk to prospects on the phone, getting hung up on, or handling objections?

I used to be like that, constantly taking the prospects that I would generate on the internet and vomit my business opportunity to them.

Time after time, I would basically get laughed at followed by am immediate “Click”.

I just couldn’t figure it out.  What was I doing wrong?  There were so many people out there that were effortlessly sponsoring people on the phone.

I did this for what seemed like a lifetime.  I wasn’t getting anywhere with my business, basically sponsoring one or two every now and then.

But then I found something that changed the way I talked to prospects forever.  It was a video interview with Mike Dillard, and master recruiter Mark Wieser.

In this video Mark get grilled by Mike on how he is able to personally sponsor over 254 reps in one year and how he is able to do it with such ease.

I figured out that I needed to change the way that I was talking to the prospects.  I needed to qualify them to see if they are right for my business, not if they would be interested in joining.

I also figured out that I am the boss, I need to control the situation, I am interviewing my prospects to see if they would be good enough to be part of my business.

Basically think of it as if you were the manager interviewing to hire a new employee.

By changing the way that I approach the conversation and the attitude that I have in the conversation, I am now not getting hung up on.  I am sponsoring more than ever.  Prospects are actually thanking me for the conversations that we have.

Sponsoring and talking to prospects doesn’t have to be hard, frustrating, or filled with rejection.

All you need to know  is how to do it the right way, the fun way, from someone that knows how to do it and do it well.

So if you would like to learn how I overcame my fear of talking to prospects on the phone, now sponsor more than ever, and how I never hear the word no again, then you need to get your hands on this free 1 hour video interview.

A Little Short On Cash Building Your Business?

•February 20, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Building your home business can truly be a costly one.  Each time you turn around you seem to spend every dollar you have on advertising and not getting ahead in your business.

It basically will nickel and dime you to death.

You really can’t get ahead in your business if you have to spend a ton on advertising, especially when you are first starting out.

Wouldn’t it be nice if someone could show you basically step by step how you can build your home business without spending a ton of money while doing it?

Well, there is some good news.

I recently came across something that I think will really help your business as it has mine.

It is a videos series by a guy named Mike Dillard called “Building On A Budget”.

In these videos Mike shows you how to build any home business for $500 or less.

I took these free videos and purchased his ridiculously low priced book, and within two weeks of applying the techniques he teaches and am now getting as many as 10 new qualified prospects per day.

The best part is that I did not spend much money while doing it.

Now I have the tools to grow my business without getting nickel and dimed to death.

You can get free access to these videos by going here…

Tired Of The Old School Network Marketing Techniques?

•February 20, 2009 • 1 Comment

Are you tired of the old school network marketing techniques? You know the 3 foot rule, hanging flyers, bugging your family and friends, and holding hotel meetings.

I know that when I first joined my first network marketing company, I was told to use these same techniques.  I was told to make a list of 100 people that I knew and basically call every one of them to ask and see if they would be interested in making some extra money.

I was only faced with questions I wasn’t able to answer, getting hung up on, and faced with nothing but rejection.

When I was officially shunned by everyone that I knew, all my upline told me to do was to go out and buy some opportunity leads.

This only led me to some more rejection and spending a bunch of money.

Now I was out of money, and had nothing to show for it.

Then just as I was going to give up, I found what I consider to be the “life saver” for my business.

This life saver I speak of was Mike Dillard’s 7 Day Free Video Boot Camp.

In these 7 free videos Mike explained how I could attract an endless stream of prospects to me ready to join and actually get paid to prospect.

These videos have really changed the way I do my business, and I think they can help you too.

Recipe for Trouble:Human Resources

•March 11, 2009 • Leave a Comment

When you are stating a new business, or even if you have been in business for some time, one of the easiest things to overlook is human resources.  When your business is small, you might have a nice family-type atmosphere.  You may be spending more time at work than you are at home.  It is easy to forget that people are your employees not your family.

Taking human resources for granted can be one of the most costly things you can ever do in your business.  The rules governing employees are complex and strict.  More often than not, in a legal dispute, the court is more likely to take the side of the employee, particularly when good documentation is not available.  There are things you can do, however, to keep you and your business out of trouble.

First, never forget that this is a business and you have a business relationship with the people that work for you.  That doesn’t mean you can’t have fun or that you have to run the business with an iron fist or that you have to be paranoid about your employees.  It does, however, mean that you need to be sure that you are following all the regulations, both federal and state.  It also means that you need to make sure that you have good procedures in place to document problems or issues.

How can you protect your employees, your business and yourself?  There is no one right answer, but there are several options.  The first option is to hire a human resource person.  This person can take on the responsibility of insuring that you are complaint with all regulations.  They can also assist with hiring, firing, employee evaluation and variety of administrative functions.  Your human resource person can also act as a liaison with your employees when there are issues.

A second option is use a professional employer organization or PEO.  The PEO serves as the HR department for your business.  They can provide all the administrative services that a regular HR department would provide, but they also provide other services such as payroll and employer tax assistance.  Because the PEO functions as a group, they can also provide benefits such as healthcare and dental and sometimes at a significantly lower cost.  But perhaps the biggest advantage to outsourcing your human resources is helping to eliminate many of the employer liability risks.  Since PEOs are a one-stop shop, you can also be sure of complete coordination of your human resources and payroll.  PEOs can be a little pricey, particularly for small businesses with less than 10 employees, but they can definitely alleviate a lot of the stress surrounding human resources.

Whatever option you use to handle your human resource needs, don’t take shortcuts.  The legal fees from one employee lawsuit can devastate a business, even if you ultimately win.  Remember that your employees are your most important resource.  Take good care of them and they will take good care of your business.

Recipe for Trouble: Communication

•March 11, 2009 • Leave a Comment

In a new business there are always lots of things going on.  At least, there should be if things are moving along.  If you are the only one involved in your business then communication is easy—you just look at yourself in the mirror every morning.  But it is far more likely that there are several people involved.  These people may be anything from investors to vendors to employees.  The more people you have involved, the more effective communication becomes essential.

Effective communication means several things.  It means that you are actually communicating what you want to communicate.  In other words, you are clear and everyone understands what you are saying.  Second, it means that you are reaching everyone that you need to reach and you have someway to confirm that they actually did get the message.  Third, everyone is actually getting the message.  They are either reading the message, listening to it, or watching it.  If, for some reason, they didn’t understand the message or they have questions, they know how to get clarification. Effective communication can be particularly challenging when everyone is in different parts of the country, but it is also even more important in those circumstances.  Nothing is more disturbing than sitting you home office 1,000 miles away from the main office and not hearing anything for days at a time.

Following up on a message is also critical.  You send out a message, everyone gets it, everyone understands it.  If the message indicates that you will be doing something in the future, you have to be absolutely sure that you follow-up and do whatever it was you said you would do.  If you have to change the plan, you need to communicate that change as soon as possible.

If there are problems of any kind that affect people, the business, or anyone associated with the business, you need to communicate those problems and the reasons for them, as much as you can.  There is nothing worse than being in the dark.  Lack of communication about problems or potential problems can lead to rumors, and panic.  The last thing any new business (or any business for that matter) is fear.  Fear in business is almost always the result of rumors and lack of communication.

Communication from the top keeps people from speculating.  If you hear a rumor, be sure to address it immediately.  If you ignore rumors they can spread like a weeds and take on a life of their own. More than one company has been destroyed by the rumor mill.

It is very easy to get caught up in the day-to-day issues involved in running a business and just feel like you are too busy to talk (or communicate) with anyone. By keeping the lines of communication open, effectively communicating and listening, you can keep you business on track and the people associated with your business engaged and involved in a positive way.

Recipe for Trouble: Success

•March 11, 2009 • Leave a Comment

It may sound strange to say that one of the things that can get you into trouble really quickly is success.  After all, that is what you are trying to accomplish, right?  Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), some companies become more successful than they ever imagined and find themselves in trouble.

One commercial that illustrates this point rather well shows a group of very young people surrounding a computer.  They click and turn on their website which is selling their product.  They start cheering as the counter starts clicking away with all the orders.  Suddenly they stop cheering as the counter starts going even faster and they start looking at each other when they realize that they are selling at a faster pace than they ever imagined.  Suddenly they have to worry about whether they have the capacity to fill all those orders, do all the shipping.  Suddenly they are in a bit of trouble.

When you were doing your business plan (you did do a business plan didn’t you???), did you make some contingencies for the greatest success you could ever imagine?  How long would it take you to gear up to meet the demand?  Do your systems have extra capacity?  Can you control how fast things go (i.e., would your server temporarily shut down if traffic reached a certain level or would the entire thing collapse under the stress)?  Do you have a way to reach people to let them know that you are experiencing higher demand than you anticipated and what you are doing to try to remedy the situation?  We all start a business to be successful, but a lack of planning can do a great deal of damage to your businesses reputation before you even really get started if things get out of hand too quickly.

Try to test things out before you go live.  If you are working through a website, turn it on for a short time and see what happens.  If you are expecting 20 hits in six hours and get 200, you may need to rethink your preparations.  Ask as many people you can about your product and see what they think.  Gather as much information as you can before you go live and be as prepared as time and your budget allow.  You don’t want to go overboard, but generally it is easier to scale back than to gear up.

Be ready for the best and go for it!  You don’t want your own systems and lack of planning to slow you down!

Recipe for Trouble:The Internet

•March 11, 2009 • Leave a Comment

We all know the power of the internet.  If you are starting a new business, the internet can be your best friend.  It can also be your worse enemy.  There are two quotes about the internet that you should keep in mind.  The first is “You can’t take something off the Internet—it’s like taking pee out of a pool” (Author Unknown).  The second is “Information on the Internet is subject to the same rules and regulations as conversation at a bar” (George Lundberg).

As discussed in an earlier article (Recipe for Trouble:  Communication), it is very important to have consistent communication with the people that are involved in your business (employees, investors, etc.).  It is just as important, however, to pay attention to what EVERYONE is saying about your business.  This includes customers, vendors, and anyone that comes into contact with you business.  If someone has a grudge against you or your business, the internet is one avenue they can use to create some big time trouble or make you the greatest thing since sliced bread.  The key is to pay attention to what is going on out there on the World Wide Web.

If someone does decide to go after you or your business on the internet, you may have a serious problem.  After all, how do you get “pee out of a pool?”  Well, you can’t get rid of it totally, but you certainly can dilute it.  Writing articles and using key word strategies with positive information about you and your business can help to make sure the negative information is buried as deep as possible is one solution (and possibly the only solution).  There are people who are experts in this kind of clean-up and depending on the severity of the problem; you might consider using their services.

Also remember that anything discussed on the internet can be read by anyone—friend or foe.  Make sure you have policies in place about what can be discussed on the internet and who is authorized to post “official” business information.  Make sure anything that is posted is carefully proofread since one carefully placed typo or less than carefully worded phrase can cause big problems. (Consider a remolded bathroom versus a remodeled bathroom or, from a church bulletin, “Our Spring Council Retreat will be hell May 8th and 9th”—Yikes!).  Don’t depend on spell checker and remember that it is very difficult to proofread your own writing.  Whenever possible, have someone else read anything that is going to be published in any format.

Pay attention and be ready in case your friendly internet suddenly turns against you.

Recipe for Trouble: IT

•March 11, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Can you be Clean, Green, and Legal?

•April 14, 2009 • Leave a Comment

You may have seen something on the news about Spokane, Washington where there is now a ban on dishwasher detergent make with phosphates. While this may seem to be an isolated case, there are actually several states (including the rest of the state of Washington) that will make dishwashing soap made with phosphates above a very small level illegal in 2010.

What is phosphate anyway and why is it used in dishwashing soap?  Phosphate is an inorganic chemical that is a combination of salt and phosphoric acid.  Because it can clean things like hard water stains, and grease, phosphates are used in all kinds of things including dishwashing soap.

Why all the fuss?  Phosphate is a problem when it finds its way to freshwater rivers and lakes.  The phosphate encouraged the growth of algae which depletes the oxygen in these rivers and lakes, killing off fish and other wildlife.

While there are green alternatives out there, deleting the phosphates from the dishwashing soap can leave one unsatisfied with the resulting product—and a lot of dirty dishes.  Plus some of these green alternatives are pricier than their cheaper phosphorous counterparts.  This has caused people to travel outside their state to obtain contraband detergent from other states—which, of course, defeats the purpose of the bank in the first place.

What should you look for in a green dishwashing soap?  Are there green products that work as well?  While there is no direct substitute for phosphorous, but there are other substances that can be used.  How well they will work depends on a number of factors, perhaps the most important being the hardness of the water used for cleaning.

One ingredient that be used is a surfactants.  Surfactants are usually biodegradable and are used to provide cleaning power and increase the ability of the water to separate the soil from the dish. Anionic surfactants work well as detergents, but can be less than effective in hard water.  Amphoteric surfactants are used for their foaming power and can often be found with anionic surfactants.  There are other substitutes for phosphates, but these can be even more dangerous than the phosphates.  They include nitrilotriacatic acid (NTA) and caustic alkaline chemicals (which are particularly dangerous when ingested—as sometimes happens with children).

It may take some trial and error to come up with the phosphate substitute that works best in your water.  It is unlikely that the ban on phosphates is going away, so it is better to start exploring the options now.  In the meantime, the soap manufacturers continue work on the perfect phosphate substitute, but there are some excellent alternatives out there.

Looking for Leads in All the Wrong Places

•August 10, 2009 • Leave a Comment

If you are involved in any kind of business that involves sponsoring or enrolling, you know that to effectively build your business at some point you need to get contacts—a lot of contacts, otherwise known as leads.  You can start with your friends and family, but those soon run out.  You can try to find your own leads (phonebook, your own website, etc.), but you are trying to sponsor or enroll people that may not be interested in your business (or any business for that matter).  If you do too much emailing to random people, you might even get accused of being a spammer!

Finding good leads and an effective system on how to use them can be very difficult.  You can do an internet search and you will find many companies that sell leads.  There is also a very large price range for individual leads—anywhere from pennies for each lead to $50 or more.  But how do you narrow down the choices to get the leads that will be interested in your business?  You need to ask some important questions when you are looking to buy leads.

The first question you need to ask is where the company is getting the leads.  Some have capture websites, some run television ads, and many other sources.  The best sources are where the person has at least expressed an interest in some kind of business.  The very best leads are people that have expressed an interest specifically in your kind of business.  Because those types of leads require the most effort on the part of the company, as you might expect, they can also be the most expensive.

Another important question is how old are the leads.  If the leads are too old, the information won’t be accurate, people may not be interested any more, they may not even remember ever signing up for information.  Some companies sell their leads to multiple people.

If you area paying a lot of money for leads, you should expect some guarantee from the company about the accuracy of the leads.  Some may even replace any leads you get that turn out to be inaccurate.

Before you go to the expense of purchasing leads, be sure you have a mechanism in place to use them.  This is usually in the form of an emailer program or a dialer program.  There are many of these programs available so, shop around.  Make sure you have the computing power for the system to work.  Trying to work the leads yourself by sending out individual emails or calling on the leads individually is inefficient.  No matter how much time you spend, you can’t get the volume you need to sort through the leads to find the ones that are really interested in working with you.

The final, and probably most important consideration is do you have the time to consistently follow up with the responses you get from people who are interested in your business.  If you don’t work consistently to follow up on your leads, you will lose most of them and you will waste potentially a great deal of money.

If you are in an MLM or network marketing company, work with you upline to develop a system to work your leads.  Sometimes you can even work leads as a group (and share the expense as well).

Leads and lead systems are an important component to building your business.  Take your time and make sure you know how to work your system before you start spending money on leads.  Also remember that when purchasing leads, you get what you pay for.

The Power of Reading, Are Your a Reader?

•August 10, 2009 • 1 Comment

We’ve all heard that lifelong readers do better at pretty much anything.  How important is reading?  Here are some interesting statistics associated with reading (from the website . http://www.readfaster.com/education_stats.asp#literacystatistics.)

More than 20 percent of adults read at or below a fifth-grade level—far below the level needed to earn a living wage.

56 percent of young people say they read more than 10 books a year, with middle school students reading the most. Some 70 percent of middle school students read more than 10 books a year, compared with only 49 percent of high school students

There are almost half a million words in our English Language – the largest language on earth, incidentally – but a third of all our writing is made up of only twenty-two words.

Out-of-school reading habits of students has shown that even 15 minutes a day of independent reading can expose students to more than a million words of text in a year.

The educational careers of 25 to 40 percent of American children are imperiled because they don’t read well enough, quickly enough, or easily enough.

And more from http://desicritics.org/2007/10/27/053758.php

·         58% of the US adult population never reads another book after high school

·         42% of college graduates never read another book

·         80% of US families did not buy or read a book last year.

·         70% of US adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years

·         57% of new books are not read to completion.

·         Most readers do not get past page 18 in a book they have purchased.

Why do we quit reading when it is one of the easiest ways to continue to educate ourselves?  Probably lots of reasons; time, a learning disability (although this is less of a reason with audio books), and we don’t see the value of continuing to read, but reading is an important way to learn.  Readers are more likely to advance in their jobs.

Don’t let yourself be another statistic!  Read a book (preferably nonfiction since reading fiction can be the equivalent to watching a soap opera on TV!).  If you don’t like reading, get audiobooks—there is a lot of downtime in the car and listening to CDs is an easy way to pass the time.  You will be surprised at how far reading can take you.  Knowledge is power!

Check with you leader or upline and ask what books they are reading today.

The Power of Sacrifice

•August 10, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Do you find yourself with too much month at the end of the money?  Have you accumulated too much debt?  Do you have a child that needs money for college?  Do you have a shortfall in retirement account?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, what are you willing to sacrifice to make more money, pay off your debts, save for college, or retire with dignity?  The answer to that question is not easy and even if you are willing to sacrifice a lot, how to do you decide what to do?

What if you committed yourself to building a business?  What would like commitment look like?  The answer to these questions is different for everyone, but there are some important considerations.  The first consideration is how fast you need to take care of the issue.  Are you in desperate financial condition now or can you see that an income stream will be ending in the future?  Are you debts affecting your ability to get a loan or costing you a great deal in fees and interest?  How old are your kids?  How soon do you need to retire? The more urgent the problem, the more you may have to sacrifice to get things going quickly.  There is a direct correlation between the amount of time you spend on the business and the rate of growth.

Can you carve out the time consistently to work your business (as well as be somewhat flexible when opportunities may arise)?  Are you willing to sacrifice time with your family, your friends for a month, six months, a year?  Is that sacrifice worth the financial gain?  We all know money isn’t everything, but when money issues are so pressing that they are constantly occupying your thoughts and actions, they are already interfering with your life.  What is worth to you to not have those worries?

Finding a business that you can build with consistent effort takes some shopping around.  Ideally you want to work with someone that understands you financial goals and will help you achieve them. Find a company that offers you proven systems and assistance (in the form of training or other support).  Don’t be afraid to spell out what you are looking for over the next month, six months, or year in terms of income.  Find out of those are realistic financial goals with this particular company.

There are great opportunities out there but, like all investments, they do take a little homework.  Making the sacrifice of time and effort for a short time can pay off in your quality of life in the long run.  As Beverly Sills said “You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don’t try.”

What’s Your Story?

•August 24, 2009 • Leave a Comment

If you have ever gotten a job, any job, you have a story to tell about how you got that job, how you came to be in that business, etc.  The same is true of multilevel marketing. Everyone has a story of how they got started, who told them about the business, and how their life has changed.  Sometimes your story is the only verbal contact you will have with someone, so you need to make it good!

While everyone may have a story, not everyone has mastered telling their story.  Sometimes we get so excited about our business, they we want to tell absolutely EVERYTHING about what this business has done for us and what the business can do for them.  Half an hour later our audience is either asleep, has put us on permanent hold (if we are on the phone), or is looking for a way to escape.  Some of us try to make the story too short.  “Well, a friend of mine called up one day and I signed up and it’s been great ever since!”  No too inspirational.

Your story should be short, but spark interest.  Your listener should want to hear more about your company (not necessarily about you), more about the products, and most importantly, how they can join you.  There are some things you can do to tell and effective and compelling story.

First, you need to practice.  If you have to, write down what you want to say and read it over.  Writing it down will force you think about what you want to say.  It will also give you a chance to really evaluate what you are saying and how you are saying it.  Practice in front of the mirror or, even better, videotape yourself.  Do you seem interested?  How long did it take? Did you mention all the essentials (your company’s name for example)?

Next, find someone to practice on.  This should be someone who can give you an honest critique of your story.  Someone in your organization is a good choice, but someone who may not have already heard your story would be good as well.  Have your upline listen as well and have them both give you feedback on the story.  Keep repeating this until you have a story that says what you want and you can tell it the way you want.

Your story is as important to your business as you business card, your website, or any other method you use to contact people.  Telling it wrong can destroy your chances and telling it right can inspire others to give it a try.

The Power of Reward

•September 28, 2009 • 1 Comment

Most companies recognize the power of reward.  Stores offer free rewards for shopping in their store via a rewards card.  Credit card companies offer all kinds of rewards for using their credit card.  Consumers are responsive to the offer of rewards—that’s why so many companies use them.

Companies also know about rewards.  Many of them offer rewards to their employees for everything from sales quotas to making a specific deadline.  Companies also know that employees respond to rewards and are motivated to receive them.  Many companies even make sure that they give that award in a forum where the person is recognized publicly for their achievement, or offer group reward where everyone shares in the success.

So why not use rewards to motivate yourself?  If you are working for yourself, you can set you goals, work hard to get there, and then forget to reward yourself.  When you are setting up your goals, why wouldn’t you decide on a reward for yourself when you reach that goal?  The best part about setting your own reward is that you know it is something you will really want.

Getting to goal and rewarding yourself can be an important part of maintaining you momentum without getting burned out.  Just going for goal after goal, even when you are recognized by the company, can become tedious and tiring day after day.  The reward you decide for yourself doesn’t have to be money.  Maybe it is an afternoon off, maybe it is a movie, maybe even just a relaxing bubble bath.  Whatever the reward, make sure it matches the goal.  The bigger the goal you achieved, the bigger the reward!

Try adding rewards to your business.  If you want to add a level of accountability, find someone and tell them what reward you have chosen when you reach that specific goal.  Adding rewards will add a new level of motivation, but also a new level of fun.  Everyone loves to do what they want to do for a chance and the opportunity to give yourself that chance shouldn’t be passed up.  You work hard—reward yourself!

Do You Need Extra Money for the Holidays?

•October 20, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Multilevel marketing can offer you a chance to earn some extra money in time for the holidays (and beyond)!  With the holidays fast approaching, this may seem like a strange time to start a new business venture, but starting now can give you some great benefits not only for that shopping, but for building a new future for 2010.  Why wait until January 1 to make some changes for the better!

One of the easiest ways to build you business quickly this time of year is to find a company that has products that can be given as gifts. Everyone is looking for gift ideas, so being able to start you business and take care of some shopping at the same time as a lot of appeal.  (Don’t forget to make sure there are also great products after the holidays!)

Network marketers often hear the complaint that someone doesn’t have time to do anything else.  So, what will take more time—working your network marketing business or taking an extra job somewhere to get extra money for the holidays?  Keep in mind that working elsewhere including transportation back and forth, possibly eating out more often (since you will be busy going back and forth), not to mention you are probably not going to be able to pick your hours.  In fact, you may even be required to work on the holiday!  If you work at home, there is no back and forth time and expense, no extra meals, and you can certainly pick your hours.  Again, it is important to find a company with a system that matches your goals and time constraints.

What about after the holidays?  Are all the bills going to disappear?  What if you could keep working this business that you already started as a continual source of supplemental income?  What if you could even earn enough to make a different in your financial situation?  What if you like the products and had to buy them anyway (in other words, if there is a minimum amount of products that have to be purchased to stay active, they are products that you would buy anyway, so there is no additional strain on your budget)?

This could be the very best time to start your business, get some of your holiday shopping done, and get some great products for yourself.  Reach the life you deserve in 2010.  There is no better time to start your new business!

Network Marketing and the ADHD Personality

•October 24, 2009 • Leave a Comment

One of the advantages of network marketing is the fact that you can work at home and work on your own time schedule. This fact is particularly useful if there are reasons that you have difficulty working a standard eight to five work day or have difficulty working in a “traditional” office setting.  People with attention deficit sometime fall into this category.  Often it is not that they can’t work under those circumstances, they would just prefer to be a little more flexible.

If you have been in network marketing any length of time, you might recognize that that you often find people with an abundance of energy in this business.  Of course, they do not all have diagnosed hyperactivity, but it is a personality trait that is very useful in the network marketing business.

Network marketing takes upbeat, positive energy.  Since a great deal of network marketing is dealing with people, it takes a lot of energy.  You have to be up most of the time.  You have to be able to keep yourself and your team motivated—and this sometimes means putting your energy in overdrive. Suddenly that trait that drove your teacher crazy is a great asset.  Take advantage of it!

Network marketing often changes.  This keeps someone with attention deficit from getting bored.  You don’t’ have to worry about anything being mundane for very long.  There are always new products to learn about, new training to listen to, and changes in the compensation plan, and new people in your company.  There is always sometime new to keep your attention-and you like it that way!

No one in your upline will think it is strange if you are very enthusiastic and talk 90 miles an hour.  In fact, they will like it.  Plus you can pace around your room while you are on the phone, no one will notice or care.  You can also pace around while you are listening to training, on a conference call, pretty much while you are doing anything.  (A web conference might be a little distracting, but luckily there probably wont’ be too many of those!)

Your network marketing business is exactly that—your business. You can run it anyway you want.  You can do it your pajamas.  You control your time.  If you want to work your business for 15 minutes or three hours, it is all okay!  Network marketing is a business that can use what may have been a problem for you into an opportunity with many of the necessary traits built in.

Commitment versus COMMITMENT

•October 27, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Many people that get involved in network marketing find themselves making a commitment when the first join to do x. X can be many things. Maybe they agreed to stay in the business for a certain amount of time, maybe they agreed to add a certain number of people to their business, maybe they agreed to contact a certain number of people, or maybe they agreed to buy a certain amount of product.  Whatever the x might be, it can be very dangerous (not to mention disappointing) to fashion your business around any of those commitments made.

Often commitments made at the beginning of a business are made with incomplete knowledge.  This incomplete knowledge can also come in many forms.  People often underestimate the time they will have available to work their business.  Sometimes their network marketing business is not given priority.  Maybe it turns out they don’t like the products.  Maybe they just forget to order. Sometimes they are resistant to the training and are not having the success they thought they would have.  They begin to doubt their abilities or the validity of their network marketing company.  Whatever the reason, their network marketing promises are either forgotten or unfulfilled.

Life being what it is, it is also impossible to predict when life events will interfere with plan.  Sickness, changes in financial status, and unexpected expenses are just a few of the things that will interfere with any business, but can be particularly harmful to a home-based network marketing business.

Network marketing is a team sport and requires the COMMITMENT of all its team members to benefit everyone on the team.  The more people on the team that chose not to participate, the more the entire team suffers. Network marketing is also an individual sport in that everyone owns their own business. As a leader, you really have very little leverage over anyone that decides not to follow their commitments.  Added to that, for many people, their network marketing business is just something “extra” that they do.  They are afraid to put in the effort that would be required to actually build a business that would support them. Getting them out of the “I can’t work my network marketing business because of X and X is why I need the extra money that I could earn from my network marketing business” can be challenging.

By communicating, providing training, and being available, you can keep as many people on track as possible, but recognizing that a certain number of people are not willing or are not able to honor their original commitment will save a lot of disappointment.

There are only two options regarding commitment. You’re either in or out. There’s no such thing as a life in-between.

The Importance of Staying Qualified in Your Business

•November 4, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Most network marketing and direct sales companies have some minimum requirement that you need to buy to stay active.  How often you need to meet this minimum requirement varies by company.  It can be monthly, quarterly, or even yearly.  Companies that don’t trust you to remember have something called autoship.  Other companies just have some amount (measured by dollars or sometimes points) that you need to order monthly to stay qualified.  Why do companies have these requirements?  How can you make sure you stay active?

There are several reasons that companies have these requirements.  One is that when you sign up to represent the business, the company wants to make sure that you have an opportunity to learn as much about the products as possible.  By requiring you to purchase something within a certain time frame, they encourage you to try and/or consistently use their products.  After all, you should be a product of the product!  Generally you are getting these products at a discount.  If you are serious about the business, you won’t mind the minimum requirements.  If you are just in the business to get the discount, this quickly becomes apparent when you don’t meet your minimum requirements.

How often you are required to meet a minimum activity level determines the type of system you need to remind yourself.  If your company uses autoship, you really don’t have to do anything (except make sure there is enough money on your card to cover the purchase!).  The company will automatically send you whatever product(s) you decided to order when you signed up for autoship at the time you designated.  Autoship is nice since you don’t have to worry about remembering to place an order. It is not so nice in that you have to remember to change the autoship if you find you want to change what you order monthly and there is generally limited flexibility to change the time that the shipment takes place.

If you have a quarterly or yearly requirement, or if your company does not use autoship, you need to be a little more proactive.  Mark your calendar (with a reminder) when the order is due.  If there is no specific time in the month that the order has to go out, decide at the beginning of the month when you plan to order and put that date on your calendar.  Most of the time you can decide what you want and just hold it in a shopping cart until you are ready to order.  If you company has this capability, decide when you want at your leisure (maybe in the beginning of the month) and just leave it in the shopping cart.  That way, if you find yourself in a time crunch, you won’t have to rush and try to find something to order.

Whatever system you use, it is important to stay qualified in your organization.  If you don’t stay qualified you may risk losing commissions or your position in the company.  Take your business seriously and buy and use the products you represent!

Putting Those Extra Products to Work for Your Business

•November 11, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Most multilevel marketing companies have a requirement (sometimes called autoship) which requires you to buy a certain amount of product per month to stay active in the company. The reasons for this requirement are the subject of many articles. No matter how much you like and use your products, you can find yourself with an over abundance of product, perhaps more than you can ever use, even if you love them. Plus there are always those discontinued items. What to do? It would be great to put them to a use that would also benefit your business wouldn’t it?

Stop-n-Shop. If you have products that are generally useful to a large number of people and you live in a fairly populated neighborhood, consider having stop-n-shop. This involves not much work on your part and can result in a lot of people learning about your business. Pick and day and a time range when you will be home (and people are likely to be available). Print postcards announcing that you will be having a stop-n-shop on that day. Take the postcards around to people in your neighborhood (and mail some out to other people around that might be interested). That day, put a sign in your yard (if your neighborhood allows it) put the products out that you wish to sell (a dining room table works great). It is also nice to put out products that people can order. Be sure you have information about your company available. Also be sure that all the prices are clearly marked. Be creative. Make suggested gift baskets or have information available that shows how the products work or their outstanding features. If nothing else, the people in the neighborhood now know what company you represent.

Charities. If you have products such as soaps, cleaning supplies, food products, or any personal item, consider donating the products to a charity. Shelters are often looking for cleaning supplies. Even vitamins and supplements are sometimes accepted, but call ahead. These kinds of products are particularly welcome during the “off season” (summer and other times of year when giving is often on a downturn). While it may not get you future customers, it will get you a nice tax deduction and someone that might normally not have access to your great products will get a chance to use them.

Gifts. Do you have people that you know would like your products, but they have never tried them? Consider giving them a gift of one of your products. You can tell them that you are giving them this product because you value their opinion. Be sure you follow-up and ask how they liked the product. While the gift came with no strings attached, if they like it enough they just may order later.

Put those products to work for you. They certainly aren’t doing anything on the shelf!

“I Don’t Have a Story”

•November 24, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Everybody has a story.  People that are in any business have a story about that business.  Maybe they don’t tell it much, but they have a story.  To people that are in network marketing, their story may be one of their most important tools.  It is such an important tool, they many people in network marketing may obsess about it.  They think there their story is as exciting or entertaining as it should be.  They are missing the point.  People that ask to hear their story really aren’t expecting to be entertained or “wowed,” they really just want to know how you got into the business, what has happened since you got into the business, and why you are still in the business.

Your story should start with how you got into the business.  This part of the story should include why you were looking for something like network marketing in the first place.  People can usually relate to the many reasons that people get into network marketing and will be much more likely to relate why they are thinking about getting into the business.

The next part of the story is what has happened since you got into the business.  Are you still glad you got in? Have you had some victories that stand out?  Has the business been what you expected?  How do you like the products?  While you may not want to talk about all these areas, you should say something about how things are going.

End your story with where you hope to take this business.  Talk a little about why are still in the business.  Most importantly, convey the fact that you are happy doing what you are doing and that you wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.

How short or how long each part of your story is depends on what you want to emphasize. If you have done really well since you got into the business and it has changed your life maybe that should be the longest part of your story.  If you first found out about the business or got into the business through some interesting circumstances—and you are now really glad it happened that way—maybe that should be the longest part of your story.

Practice telling your story and really believe in it.  People will immediately notice if you are not enthusiastic. Don’t embellish the story (it is too hard to remember what you said), just believe in what you are doing and the story will sell itself.

So just what is your story? Start spreading teh story today. Be loud and be proud. Let the world hear your story.

To be a person is to have a story to tell. —Isak Dinesen
